Preventing influenza with vaccination

Vaccination is an effective means of preventing influenza, especially during epidemics. In order for the immune system to achieve the necessary level of defence by the beginning of the flu season, it is important to get vaccinated in advance, preferably a month before the expected peak of the disease.

Two types of vaccines are used in Russia: live and split vaccines. Live vaccines contain weakened viruses that can cause mild illness but are not dangerous. Split vaccines, which contain fragments of dead viruses, are considered safer and are more often used in polyclinics and educational institutions. These vaccines stimulate the production of antibodies to more than one type of virus, which helps the body build a more robust defence.

The vaccination procedure promotes the production of antibodies against different strains of the influenza virus. It is important that the vaccine includes current strains of the virus, as this increases the likelihood that the vaccination will prevent illness. The ideal time to be vaccinated is before the epidemic begins, allowing the body to develop a full immune response.

Vaccination is recommended for anyone who wants to reduce their risk of getting the flu. However, if you had a vaccination last year with complications, or if you are allergic to egg white, you should refuse vaccination. Also, people with chronic diseases should consult a doctor before vaccination.

Symptoms such as headache, runny nose, cough, muscle aches and fatigue may occur after vaccination. These reactions are normal and go away within a short time. It is important to remember that a full immune response is not formed immediately, so it is recommended that you continue to use additional prophylaxis in the period after vaccination, especially if you are in contact with a large number of people.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, also helps to strengthen the immune system and reduce the likelihood of illness. Remember to practice good hygiene and avoid contact with people who are sick to minimise the risk of infection as much as possible.
