Sleep occupies a significant part of our lives and deeply affects our health and well-being. Many traditions, such as Tibetan medicine, practice dream analysis as an important element of diagnosis and treatment. In the Tibetan Bon Teaching, developed in the 6th century BC, dreams are considered to be manifestations of subtle aspects of human consciousness, making them an important source for understanding the hidden causes of various conditions and disorders.
In Tibetan medicine, dreams play a key role in discovering the roots of diseases. Since diseases often arise due to energy imbalances, dreams can reveal hidden causes of disturbances at a deep level of consciousness. At this subtle level, dreams become an indicator of a person’s internal state, displaying hidden emotional or physical problems that are not clearly manifested in the waking state.
During wakefulness, our mind is focused on information coming through the senses and ignores subconscious processes. This is due to the need to quickly react to surrounding events and maintain safety. During sleep, the body and mind are freed from the constant influx of external signals, allowing consciousness to focus on internal processes that manifest as dreams. It is this difference that makes dreams an important object of study in traditional Tibetan practices.
Tibetan sleep yoga also pays attention to energy channels and chakras, which are associated with consciousness and emotions. Tibetan medicine suggests that there are three main energy channels and five main chakras in the body, which play an important role in the distribution of energy. During sleep, energy is sometimes directed to the central channel, which allows access to deeper levels of consciousness. However, conscious dream management requires practice that allows a person to recognize dreams and consciously manage energy.
Dreams are divided into three main types: dreams-impressions, karmic dreams and prophetic dreams. Dreams-impressions reflect events and emotions experienced during the day. These dreams are uninformative, since they are associated only with everyday impressions. Karmic dreams show the causes and consequences of past actions, reflecting accumulated experience that affects the current life. These dreams give an idea of the deep motives and fears of a person, often remaining unconscious.
Prophetic dreams that occur in the morning or in moments close to awakening are of particular value. Such dreams can contain information about the future or indications of important aspects of current situations. In order to correctly interpret a prophetic dream, experience in symbolism and understanding of one's own inner world are necessary. Without the practice of sleep yoga and spiritual self-improvement, distinguishing a prophetic dream from others can be difficult.
Thus, Tibetan medicine and sleep yoga offer unique approaches to diagnosing dreams, considering them as an important tool for awareness and working with oneself. Dreams help a person understand the hidden aspects of their health and life, and also serve as a guide on the path to personal and spiritual development.
