  • Prostatitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention
    Опубликовано: 2025-11-01 10:10:41

Prostatitis is one of the most common diseases of the male genitourinary system, affecting men of all ages. According to statistics, chronic prostatitis is diagnosed in 5-8% of men overall, and 35-40% of men aged 20 to 40 exhibit its symptoms. The disease can develop both after infections and as a result of congestion in the prostate gland.

Prostatitis has a variety of causes. Most commonly, it is caused by infections that reach the prostate through sexual intercourse or through the blood and lymphatic system from other sources of inflammation, such as tooth decay, sinusitis, or rectal diseases. Stagnation of prostatic fluid is also a key cause: it develops with prolonged abstinence, interrupted intercourse, or insufficient sexual activity. Additional risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, hypothermia, and alcohol abuse.

Prostatitis symptoms vary, but the main manifestations include pain in the perineum, suprapubic area, or groin, frequent and painful urination, and discomfort during ejaculation. Some men experience erectile dysfunction and decreased sexual function. In chronic cases, symptoms may periodically subside, often leading to delays in seeking medical attention.

Ignoring the condition can lead to serious complications. Acute prostatitis can develop into a prostate abscess, accompanied by high fever, severe pain, and difficulty urinating. If left untreated, the chronic form of the disease gradually spreads, causing cystitis, pyelonephritis, vesiculitis, or epididymo-orchitis, which can ultimately lead to infertility.

Prostatitis prevention includes maintaining a regular sexual life, a balanced diet, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, and engaging in physical activity. Exercises that stimulate blood circulation in the pelvic organs are especially important, such as squats, leg swings, cycling, and exercises to strengthen the perineal muscles. Prompt treatment of any infectious diseases also reduces the risk of developing prostatitis.

For men who have already had prostatitis, secondary prevention is important. This includes regular checkups with a urologist, courses of vitamin supplements and general tonics, and physical therapy in the fall and spring. The combination of these measures helps reduce the risk of recurrence and maintain the health of the genitourinary system for many years.
