  • Swaddling and hips: new facts and recommendations
    Опубликовано: 2023-11-17 10:10:20

Swaddling was previously thought to promote straight and beautiful legs in babies. However, recent research has taught us in a new way - we now know that tight swaddling can pose a health risk, namely increasing the risk of hip dysplasia. This occurs due to the unnatural positioning of the baby's legs caused by swaddling too tightly. Scientific studies have shown that during the first six months of life, a baby's legs should be allowed to move freely rather than being fixed in a rigid position.

It is especially important to realize that during the first few months of life, babies' hips are the most malleable to deformity. Normal development assumes that movement of the legs causes the head of the femur to bore deeply into the appropriate socket, changing the position of the joint. If there is no pressure on the head, the socket may become flat and plate-like, which in turn is a risk factor for hip dysplasia.

Thus, old beliefs about the benefits of tight swaddling may not only be outdated, but potentially harmful to an infant's health.

The list of the most common factors contributing to the development of hip dysplasia also includes breech presentation and genetic predisposition.

It is important to note that early diagnosis of hip dysplasia can be made and early treatment is quite effective. You should not ignore the recommendations of a pediatric orthopedist or surgeon, as timely intervention can significantly reduce risks and ensure your baby's health.
