    Coughing is one of the most unpleasant conditions we encounter during illness. It prevents us from sleeping, working and attracts unwanted attention in public places. Therefore, it is important to know how to deal with this unpleasant symptom.

    If your doctor has ruled out serious causes of cough, such as asthma or infectious lung diseases, then you can try the following tips.

    First, try hot tea with honey. The hot drink will help soothe your throat. You can also inhale the steam from a kettle of boiling water to ease your breathing.

    Breathe moist air. Using a humidifier or taking a warm shower can help reduce throat irritation.

    Suck on a lollipop. Caramel or licorice lozenges can help reduce coughing.

    You don't always need to suppress a cough. If you have a cough with phlegm, this can be helpful as it helps clear your airways. However, if the cough is preventing you from sleeping, you may want to take an overnight cough suppressant.

    If the cough doesn't go away or gets worse, see your doctor. Especially if the cough is interfering with your normal life or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, chest pain, or weakness. Your doctor may prescribe treatment or further tests for you.

    Do not overuse cough suppressants. They can have side effects and are not always effective. If you have a simple dry cough, see your doctor to find the most appropriate treatment.

    Drink more fluids. Drinking water, juices and broths will help thin the mucus in your airways and make it easier to expectorate.

    Sometimes antacids can help with coughing, especially at night. They can relieve irritation in the throat caused by reflux from the stomach. But don't forget that self-medication can be dangerous, so it is better to consult your doctor before using any medication.
